Track 10: VOODOO QUEEN
Music and lyrics: Stephanie Torres
Vocals: Beth Kahlen (lead), Carrie Rambo, Stephanie Torres
Piano: Brian Ward
Bass: Dave Captein
Drums: Kurt Deutscher
Tenor Saxophone: Matt Taylor
Percussion: Israel Annoh
Lyrics:
Her hair was in tangles, her mind a little weak
But her intuition was unique
Black cats and potions, her affinity
Needless to say it, but she frigtened me
Chorus:
She's a voodoo queen, that voodoo queen
Way down in New Orleans it's such a spooky scene
She's a voodoo queen, that voodoo queen
Please stop this ride and let me off
Proceed with caution screamed the voice inside my head
But with sick fascination I swallowed back my dread
Her bony finger beckoned with a flashy toothless grin
I wondered if her message was heaven-sent or sin
(Chorus)
I don't want to know what you have to say
Pretty please, I'm begging you, please just go away
Can't you see I'm frightened and fragile and fried
I just need to run away and hide
Her hand was on my shoulder, she looked deep into my eyes
My fear and panic, they slowly did subside
Can I get a cigarette? she tirely exclaimed
My relief was overwhleming, my life forever changed
She's a voodoo queen, that voodoo queen
Way down in New Orleans it's such a spooky scene
She's a voodoo queen, that voodoo queen
With a rum and Coke or three, she seemed to me to be
A
voodoo queen, that voodoo queen
Thought she had the second sight, but all she wanted was a light
She's a psychic and a mystic
Maybe not

About this tune...
I wrote this having returned from a trip to New Orleans.
Not really autobiographical, but more a playful look at what happens when
someone who gets caught up in the mysticism of New Orleans, combines that
with too much alcohol. I love Matt’s “dirty sax” sounds,
and Brian’s attempts to play like Liberace…they really set
the mood. Beth and Carrie and I collaborated on the ending. We had a lot
of fun, but then we always do! -- Stephanie
